A few days ago in technology class we had to make presentations about the life of technology geniuses, one of those geniuses was John Von Neumann. He was a polymath and pioneer of the application of operator theory to quantum mechanics, in the development of functional analysis. Von Neumann also worked in the nuclear physics involving thermonuclear reactions and the hydrogen bomb.
- He had studied at two universities at the same time (University of Budapest and University of Zurich). From 1927 to 1929 he became internationally renowned for his work in mathematics including some important contributions to the mathematical foundation of quantum mechanics.
- A couple of years later Von Neumann moved to the United States to teach at Princeton University. Since he moved to USA he became involved in the Second World War and in the Manhattan Project. His interests began to turn to electronic computers.
He developed a logical design for computers that paid attention to such concerns as data storage and the processing of instructions. This design, called “von Neumann architecture,” became the basic concept of most computers.
